Recent Developments in Seed Technology and Obstacles to be Overcome
Franklin T. Bonner
1996: Gatlinburg, TN
Four developments in tree seed technology are identified: (1) seed moisture in recalcitrant seeds during storage; (2) precise control of moisture during stratification; (3) spin-offs from the use of precision seeders; and (4) declining support for seed research in North America. Five obstacles to better seed utilization for nurseries are also identified as targets for improvements. They are: (1) storage of recalcitrant seeds; (2) control of moisture during stratification; (3) complex dormancy of shrubs and minor hardwoods; (4) seed cleaning and conditioning; and (5) communication. Possible solutions for these obstacles are presented.
